ZEKE (SHERLOCK)
Hi Pam, it's
been busy around here. I'll give you a quick update. Sorry it took awhile for this.
I adopted Sherlock on
May 26, and renamed him Zeke. He's a sweet, sometimes goofy boy who keeps
me on my toes.
Zeke loves his walks
outside and we've been logging between 12,000 to 23,000 steps daily (much more
scenic and fun than my former treadmill workouts)!
I enrolled Zeke
in a basic obedience class and he loved it...especially getting the chance to
interact with his classmates which included a lab puppy and tiny Chihauhua.
He's progressed nicely, walks well on a leash, just watches squirrels and
chipmunks instead of trying to chase them, and obeys the command, "leave
it", when he encounters toads, unidentified "things", and even a
female mallard who was sitting in our path one morning!
Zeke had a soft spot
in his heart for our elderly dog, Mabel. He would leave a piece of his
food on the floor for her near her bowl during supper time. (Sadly, 12
year old Mabel is no longer with us.). Zeke enjoys playing with his other
doggie sister though, 9 year old Ellie, taking walks, sitting on the deck and
playing fetch with one of his tennis balls.
My boy Zeke is a
blessing. I would like to thank the Humane Society of Burnett County for
allowing me to adopt Zeke. I truly appreciate the follow up calls, and
invaluable support provided by staff member Emily, who helped answer my
questions and offered advice to help Zeke and I during our transition as a
family. It is apparent that she, along with the other staff members truly
care about their shelter animals. In her desire for updates and offer of
continued support to us as Zeke's new family, Emily once said to me,
"Remember, we're in this for the long haul". This is a special
person working in a special place. If the Humane Society of Burnett
County has not yet been recognized as an excellent model for animal shelters,
then it should be.
